placement procedure - English assessment test

At British Learning Academy, we want every student to begin their course in the class that is right for them. Our online placement test, completed before arrival, helps us understand each student’s current level of English so they can start learning confidently from day one.

Why we use an online test

Completing the test before students arrive allows our academic team to prepare classes more accurately in advance. It helps us identify each learner’s strengths, areas for development, and overall language level, so that lessons are both supportive and appropriately challenging.

What the test includes

Before coming to campus, students will be asked to complete an online English test. This gives us an initial picture of their grammar, vocabulary, reading and general language ability. The test is simple to access and can be completed at a convenient time before travel.

Speaking check on arrival

We know that written test results do not show the full picture. For this reason, students’ speaking and communication skills are also checked by their teacher at the beginning of their course. This allows us to see how confidently they use English in a real classroom setting.

Final class placement

We combine the results of the online test with the teacher’s first classroom assessment to place each student in the most suitable class. This helps ensure that students are working at the right level from the start and are able to make the best possible progress during their stay.

Our approach to class placement

Classes are organised according to English level first and foremost. Our aim is to place students where they will feel comfortable, engaged and challenged. Wherever possible, we also create international classes so that students can use English naturally with classmates from different countries. This level-based and internationally mixed approach reflects the model described on the source page.

If a student has not completed the test

If a student has not completed the online placement test before arrival, they can still join the programme. In that case, they will complete the assessment once on campus and their class placement will be adjusted as needed after their first lesson, which mirrors the fallback process described on the source page.

Learning at the right level

Being placed in the right class is an important part of a successful language-learning experience. It allows students to participate fully, build confidence, and improve their English in a class that matches their ability.
